Hyderabad, June 23, 2025: Freemasons of Telangana organised a Walkathon titled “Say No To Drugs” on Sunday in the city, in a bid to raise awareness about the growing menace of drug abuse. The event was held on the eve of Universal Brotherhood Day, observed globally by Freemasons on June 24 every year.
The walk covered a half-kilometre stretch starting from Marri Channa Reddy Memorial Rock Garden near Indira Park, up to Ramakrishna Mutt, before returning to the starting point.
The Walkathon was flagged off by Shri Sandeep Shandilya, Director of the Telangana Anti Narcotics Bureau, in the esteemed presence of Swami Bodhamayananda Maharaj, President of Ramakrishna Mutt, Hyderabad.
In his address, Shri Sandeep Shandilya emphasised the dangers of drug abuse, stating,
“Drugs spoil dreams, destroy lives and harm society. Nothing good comes from drugs — stay away from them.”
Swami Bodhamayananda Maharaj delivered an inspiring message, urging people to seek strength from within:
“Why depend on external stimulants like drugs or alcohol when you have your atma bhalam (inner strength)? Drugs shatter peace and happiness.”
Following the walk, Swami Bodhamayananda Maharaj addressed the Freemasons and their families at the Ramakrishna Mutt, reinforcing the message of spiritual and social well-being.
Over 200 participants, including 60 Freemasons and their families, members of the Telangana Narcotics Bureau, Impact Foundation, and NCC volunteers, joined the initiative. Many held placards with powerful messages advocating against drug use.
Freemasonry, a global fraternity with a 307-year legacy, promotes values of brotherhood, integrity, and social responsibility. In India, the organisation has been active for over 300 years. The event was part of the celebrations leading up to Universal Brotherhood Day, which commemorates the formation of the Grand Lodge of England on June 24, 1717 — marking the formal beginning of modern Freemasonry.
The Walkathon showcased the Freemasons’ commitment to community welfare and the universal fight against drug abuse.
