World Autism Awareness Day Celebrated with ‘A Leap Into Understanding’ by KCC and Big Leap
Kolkata, 04th April 2025: In celebration of World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) 2025, Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC) in collaboration with Big Leap Foundation presents A Leap into Understanding — conducted an event aiming to promote not just awareness but also acceptance of individuals on the autism spectrum, encouraging society to embrace and respect them for who they truly are.
First established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, WAAD has played a vital role in increasing understanding and inclusion for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This year, KCC and Big Leap Foundation take this initiative a step further, focusing on acceptance and integration rather than just awareness.
The event will feature an inspiring lineup of activities, showcasing the talents and stories of children on the autism spectrum. Highlights include:
- Collaborative Performances: Children from Little Steps Daycare and other participants will present group and solo performances, celebrating their unique abilities and self-expression.
- Personal Advocacy Story: A remarkable child will share his journey of learning his mother tongue, an achievement that holds special significance for children with ASD who often face language development challenges.
- Expert Insights: Dr. Aditi Bandopadhyay and Sanghamitra Mukherjee will share their insights and perspectives on autism, acceptance, and inclusivity.
- Parent and Educator Engagement: A special performance by teachers and caregivers will be dedicated to students and parents, fostering a spirit of unity. Parents will also be invited to share their experiences, providing valuable insights into raising and supporting children with autism.
- Documentary Screening: A documentary will be showcased, offering an in-depth look into the daily lives of children on the spectrum and the supportive environment that nurtures their growth.
Richa Agarwal, Chairperson, KCC, says “At KCC, we believe in the transformative power of creativity and inclusion. In 2025 we continue our tradition of celebrating this day of awareness by collaborating with organisations and individuals who work tirelessly to support and advocate for individuals on the autism spectrum. A Leap into Understanding is also a leap into fostering a society that welcomes every individual with dignity and respect. Through collaboration and artistic expression, we aim to build a more accepting world where children on the autism spectrum can thrive. We invite everyone to join us in this meaningful journey.”
