Forms Secures Spotlight: Exploring the Dynamics of Collaboration and Artistic EvolutionThe Stainless Gallery in New Delhi is set to host Forms ////Formation, a group exhibition that explores the complexities and intricacies of collaborative work, personal evolution and the forces that bind individuals together in artistic practice. The exhibition will open on Monday, February 3rd, 2025 invites viewers to experience the dynamic interplay of artistic creation and cooperation. The title, “space forms space four forward slashes formation,” reflects the conceptual underpinnings of the show — an exploration of how formations are created, sustained and evolve over time, both individually and collectively.

‘Forms ////Formation’ group art exhibition will be open to the public from February 3rd to 16th, 2025 from 11am to 7pm at The Stainless Gallery, MIRA Corporate Suites, Friends Colony, Mathura Road, New Delhi

Forms ////Formation is a mix of artistic practices, including painting, sculpture, traditional printmaking, photography and ceramics. The collection was assembled over eight months, involving sustained communication between the participating artists who shared their work processes, life stories and mutual understanding. The exhibition features the works of prominent Indian senior artists, including the iconic ceramist Ira Chaudhuri and painter-printmaker-educator Anupam Sud, both trained under the mentorship of Somnath Hore and Jagmohan Chopra.

The exhibition also includes the works of renowned artist Seema Kohli, who recently inaugurated her new studio space in Delhi, as well as Padma Bhushan awardee and sculptor Biman Das, one of India’s most celebrated living artists. Biman Das, who currently serves as the Chairman of AIFACS, will present one of his most recent sculptures.

Eminent photographer Aditya Arya, Director of Museo Camera Gurgaon, will exhibit his striking cyanotype prints and conduct a workshop during the exhibition at the gallery. Senior artist Ananda Moy Banerji, a key figure in bringing this diverse group of artists together, will display his recent series of original paintings, along with fellow Multiple Encounters founders Dattatraya Apte and Sushanta Guha, both of whom are early recipients of the prestigious Charles Wallace India Trust Award. Another awardee, Kishore Chakraborty, will present his sculptures as part of the show.

The exhibition also honous the contributions of late artist Rini Dhumal, who worked under the guidance of KG Subramanyan and Krishna Reddy. Her powerful artwork focused on the strength and power of women, a theme that resonates deeply with the exhibition’s overarching themes of formation and collaboration. Her husband, senior artist P.D. Dhumal, will also be featured in the exhibition.

In addition to these renowned figures, mid-career artists like Alita Chandra, Prasanta Kalita, Madhur Sen and Saurabh Narang will showcase their recent works, further enriching the diversity of artistic expression. Emerging talent is also represented by younger artists such as Annu Gupta, Priyanka Batra and Nanki Singh, whose works bring fresh perspectives to the collective dialogue.

On the occasion, Artist and Curator Saurabh Narang said, “Forms ////Formation is an exploration of the transformative power of collaboration in art. Through this exhibition, we aim to delve into how artists, despite their differing approaches and individual aspirations, come together to create something greater than the sum of their parts. It’s a celebration of how collective energy shapes not just art, but the very process of creation itself.”

The genesis of Forms ////Formation began during the planning stages of last year’s retrospective group exhibition Rupantar, curated by Dr. Alka Pande at The Visual Arts Gallery, New Delhi. The exhibition brought together five founding members of the artist group Multiple Encounters, whose long-term collaboration began with the creation of the Indian Printmakers Guild at Lalit Kala’s Artist Studio in Garhi. Their works, spanning from 1980 to 2024, demonstrated the evolution of their practices and their ability to sustain a collective identity despite differing beliefs and methodologies. This observation of collaborative synergy sparked deeper questions: how do individuals in shared creative spaces co-exist, and how do they adapt and evolve while maintaining their personal aspirations?

As the exhibition took shape, it expanded into a broader investigation of cooperative work processes, focusing on when roles shift, how responsibilities are shared, and the impact of circumstantial change on creative practices. The exhibition explores the role of mutual collaboration, even when individual goals may not align. By bringing together artists from different stages of their careers, the exhibition reflects on how teamwork fosters growth, learning, and evolution in art.

Forms ////Formation is an invitation to reflect on the power of collaboration in artistic practice, exploring how shared spaces, ideas, and experiences can lead to the creation of new and unexpected forms. This exhibition promises to be a dynamic and thought-provoking exploration of collective creative energy and the evolving relationships between artists and their work.

Artist Saurabh Narang who had an unforgettable experience in interacting with the senior fellow artists, felt as if he’s underwent reformation in some sort of pilgrimage, and thanks the senior artists from the formation known as ‘Multiple Encounters’ especially Ananda Moy Banerji Sir whose guidance and constructive role enabled The Forms and Formation to come together.
