Green Energy: Mohit Kamboj feels it will be a game changer for rural India
By Mohit Kamboj – a visionary leader, entrepreneur, and philanthropist dedicated to progress, unity, and transformative change across India
The world today stands at a pivotal juncture. As the climate crisis deepens and fossil fuel dependence becomes increasingly unsustainable, the global shift towards green energy is no longer just an environmental necessity, it is a powerful socio-economic catalyst. In India, this transition offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to uplift millions, drive inclusive development, and redefine our energy future.
As someone who has seen first-hand the transformative force of entrepreneurship and innovation in enabling social change, I believe green energy is more than just the next industrial revolution, it is the great equaliser India needs. It can revolutionise not only how we generate and consume power, but how we empower people across geographies and income brackets.
A Game-Changer for Rural India
India’s rural heartland continues to grapple with inconsistent access to electricity, despite notable improvements in electrification over the past decade. In many remote areas, power remains unreliable or prohibitively expensive. Here, decentralised renewable energy solutions, particularly solar microgrids and clean energy tech, can fill the gap with remarkable results.
Picture a farmer in Vidarbha or Bundelkhand using a solar-powered irrigation system that cuts diesel dependency and enhances crop productivity. Envision a tribal school lit up by solar panels, allowing children to study after sundown and dream beyond boundaries. Green energy can usher in a new era of energy democracy, where every household becomes a self-sustained power producer, independent of ageing, inconsistent grids.
Green Jobs: Building Livelihoods, Not Just Saving the Planet
India’s green transition is as much about economic opportunity as it is about ecological survival. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), India could create over 3 million new jobs in renewable energy by 2030. These jobs won’t be limited to tech parks or research labs. They will thrive in solar farms, wind energy sites, biomass operations, and decentralized maintenance hubs, spanning tier-2 and tier-3 cities and beyond.
For a country with a large and growing young population, this presents a powerful opportunity. With targeted skilling initiatives, youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds can secure dignified, future-ready employment. Green energy, therefore, perfectly complements the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, a self-reliant India anchored in innovation and sustainability.
A Startup Goldmine: Innovation at the Last Mile
Green energy is also catalyzing a wave of entrepreneurial innovation across India. Start-ups are designing solar kits for rural households, manufacturing clean cookstoves to reduce indoor pollution, and building low-cost energy storage solutions tailored to underserved communities.
With the right mix of policy incentives, access to finance, and market linkages, these ventures can scale rapidly, ensuring that clean energy reaches even the most remote corners of the country. Integrating green energy with digital tools like IoT-based performance monitoring or blockchain-enabled energy trading also opens up entirely new business models. India has the talent, the ideas, and the drive to lead this transformation globally.
