Bhubaneswar, Aug 20: Coastal Odisha experienced hot and uncomfortable weather on Thursday as high humidity pushed up the heat index in several areas, including Bhubaneswar and Puri.
According to meteorological observations, the low-pressure system that had influenced weather conditions over the region has moved away from Odisha. With its influence weakening, coastal areas are likely to experience warmer and more humid conditions during the day.
Bhubaneswar recorded 30.2°C with 78 per cent humidity at 8:30 am, while the heat index reached around 38°C. In Puri, the temperature stood at 32.6°C, with humidity at 81 per cent and the heat index touching 47°C, making conditions particularly uncomfortable.
The combination of high temperature and humidity can make the weather feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature. Coastal residents and visitors may therefore experience increased discomfort, particularly during the afternoon.
People are advised to remain well hydrated, avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight during peak daytime hours and take regular breaks in cooler or shaded areas.
Children, elderly people and those more vulnerable to heat-related discomfort should take extra precautions as the hot and humid conditions persist.
The weather pattern is a reminder that even after a low-pressure system moves away, coastal humidity can continue to keep temperatures feeling oppressive, especially during the daytime
