Pune: The monsoon has arrived, bringing much-needed relief from the heat. But while many welcome the season, experts are witnessing an uptick in foot and ankle injuries. There is a surge in foot and ankle injuries since the rains began, due to the simple act of walking outdoors. It is imperative to stay vigilant during rainy days by taking utmost care of your well-being.
The monsoon, with its constant rain and damp surfaces, can invite trouble for those walking outdoors. “Slippery roads, wet tiles, uneven pavement roads and muddy paths make it easier to slip or misstep, often causing foot and ankle injuries. An ankle twist typically happens when the foot suddenly turns inward or outward, straining or tearing the supporting ligaments. If not treated properly, this painful injury can compromise the mobility and range of motion. It will be difficult for the patient to perform activities like walking, and they may struggle daily. So, seek timely intervention and improve the quality of life. Every month, we see at least 3-4 cases of ankle twists and foot injuries caused by slippery sidewalks, pothole-ridden roads, and improper footwear. There is around 30% surge in foot and ankle injuries in people aged 25-65. These injuries may seem minor initially, but can lead to chronic pain if not treated promptly by an expert. Pedestrians, especially the elderly and office-goers, are at greater risk when stepping out during or just after rain,” Explained Dr Dr Shyam Thakkar Consultant -Orthopedic Surgeon,Specialist in Foot & and Reconstruction, Apollo Spectra Pune.
Dr Shyam Added, “From simple sprains to severe fractures, the nature of these injuries varies from person to person. We’ve seen cases where even young adults have required surgery after slipping on wet stairs or muddy streets. While most of the cases can be treated well with proper rest and immobilization, followed by good rehabilitation, some cases may require surgery if not treated properly in initial stages. Those suffering from recurrent ankle sprains should consult a Foot & Ankle Specialist. Nowadays, even the surgery required in such cases are key hole surgeries which are quite superior than open surgery in terms of early recovery, less blood loss and minimal pain. If untreated, this may land up into arthritis at a younger age.”
“So, check your footwear regularly for wear and tear, ensure to choose appropriate footwear, say NO high heels, or open-toed shoes. Instead, wear slip-resistant, well-fitted shoes with ankle support. Walk carefully especially on unfamiliar or waterlogged paths. Gentle exercises and balance training can help improve stability. Older people should consider using a walking stick or handrail when navigating slippery surfaces,” Concluded Dr Shyam.
