“Advanced Stenting Technique Successfully Treats Massive Brain Aneurysm in 55-Year-Old Patient”
Mumbai- An advanced stenting technique was used to successfully treat a 55-year-old patient with a life-threatening brain aneurysm at Apex Multi Speciality Hospital,Borivali. Vahida Bano (age 55) from Powai had a sudden onset splitting headache which she described as the worst she’s ever suffered, along with multiple episodes of vomiting and followed by unconsciousness. She was taken to a local hospital and then she was admitted under the guidance of Dr. Vivek Patel, Neurosurgeon in Apex Multi Speciality Hospital Borivali (East). Dr. Vivek Patel has suggested CT scan which showed Sub-Arachnoid Hemorrhage due to rupture of an aneurysm in the posterior communicating Artery (PComm). Aneurysm is a bulge or ballooning in a blood vessel of the brain. It’s often described as looking like a berry hanging on a stem. Aneurysms occur when the wall of the blood vessel becomes weak and bulges outward. Giving more information on this medical case Dr. Vivek Patel Neurosurgeon from Apex Multi Speciality Hospital says, “Aneurysm rupture can lead to a severe splitting headache, nausea, vomiting, stroke and even death. Dr. Vivek Patel performed a 4 vessel Cerebral Angiography (DSA) which revealed a PComm aneurysm with a wide neck. This Aneurysm could be treated by either doing a craniotomy, which entails opening the skull, identifying the Aneurysm and placing a clip across the neck of the aneurysm and occluding it or endovascular coiling the Aneurysm, where with help of special catheters which are passed through the femoral artery in the groin, we reach the offending artery in the brain and place coils inside the sac of the aneurysm or place an intrasaccular device. So, after explaining thorough counselling and due consents & we decided to place an intrasaccular device called CONTOUR. This aneurysm had a wide neck, which would entail the need to place a Stent or a Flow Divertor device to prevent the coils from falling back. The advantage of using an intrasaccular device is that there is no need for Stent or a Flow Divertor. The procedure was uneventful and after 3 days she was discharged.”
Aneurysms can cause life-threatening brain bleeds. Performing such procedures requires high end infrastructure and the right expertise. Such procedures need the right expertise and infrastructure to provide the best treatment for the patient, and advancements like this can help us achieve this, added by Dr. Vivek Patel Neurosurgeon from Apex Multi Speciality Hospital, Borivali.
