Regency Health Sets a New Benchmark with First-Ever Robotic Tubal Reversal in Uttar Pradesh

Kanpur, May 08th, 2025: Regency Health Kanpur has achieved a medical milestone by successfully performing Uttar Pradesh’s first robot-assisted tubal ligation reversal (TLR) using the advanced Da Vinci Surgical System. The landmark procedure was performed at Regency Tower 2 by Dr. Yuthika Sharma Bajpai, Senior Consultant, Reproductive Medicine, marking a significant advancement in reproductive and minimally invasive surgery in the state.

This cutting-edge procedure was performed on a woman who had previously undergone tubal ligation after two cesarean deliveries (LSCS). Tragically, she lost her older child and sought to restore her fertility. Due to her medical history—including two prior abdominal surgeries—and the possibility of requiring another cesarean in the future, a robot-assisted tubal reversal was deemed the safest and most effective option.

Traditionally, tubal ligation reversal is done through open abdominal surgery (laparotomy) involving microsurgical techniques. A laparoscopic approach is also used in some centers, but it presents technical challenges, particularly in suturing the delicate tubal ends with non-flexible instruments. However, with the Da Vinci robotic platform, the surgical team at Regency Health was able to utilize advanced, wristed instruments with seven degrees of freedom, offering unmatched dexterity, precision, and control.

“The dexterity provided by the Da Vinci robot made it possible to perform this delicate surgery with the precision of microsurgery while minimizing trauma to the patient. This is as good as the gold standard, with the added benefit of reduced patient morbidity. I’m deeply thankful to my mentors, my colleagues, and Dr. Atul Kapoor and his team for their support throughout this journey,” said Dr. Yuthika Sharma Bajpai.

The Da Vinci Surgical System is a globally recognized robotic platform for minimally invasive surgeries, transforming complex operations across specialties such as urology, gynecology, and cardiothoracic surgery. It translates the surgeon’s hand movements at a console into smaller, more precise movements of instruments inside the patient’s body.

Tubal ligation reversal, or tubal reanastomosis, involves rejoining fallopian tubes that were previously blocked or cut. The goal is to re-establish a functional pathway between the ovary and uterus, enabling natural conception. While many women opt for IVF after sterilization, robot-assisted reversal offers a minimally invasive and fertility-restoring alternative for selected patients.

This successful procedure underscores Regency Health’s commitment to bringing world-class medical innovation to Kanpur and Uttar Pradesh. With this breakthrough, the hospital strengthens its position as a regional leader in advanced gynecological and fertility-preserving surgeries.
