Guwahati, Aug 8: Assam’s handloom sector is receiving renewed attention as the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) honoured local weavers and highlighted the potential to build a Rs 5,000 crore export market for the state’s traditional handloom products.
The initiative comes at a time when the handloom sector remains an important source of income for thousands of families across Assam, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities.

Recognising the contribution of weavers, the programme focused on improving opportunities for artisans by connecting traditional skills with better markets, institutional support and wider commercial opportunities.
The proposed export target could create new avenues for Assam’s weavers to reach national and international buyers, while helping increase the value of locally produced textiles.
For many weaving households, stronger market access is as important as financial support. Better access to buyers, modern marketing channels, product development and organised supply chains can help artisans earn more from their work and make weaving a more sustainable livelihood for younger generations.
The focus on exports could also encourage greater investment in design, quality improvement, packaging and production infrastructure. This, in turn, can create opportunities for women-led households, small producer groups and rural enterprises connected to the handloom ecosystem.
NABARD’s engagement with the sector is aimed at helping Assam move from fragmented artisan production towards a stronger and more market-oriented handloom economy.
The proposed Rs 5,000 crore export opportunity represents not only a commercial target but also the potential to strengthen rural livelihoods, preserve Assam’s weaving traditions and give local artisans a larger role in the state’s economic growth.
With the right combination of market access, finance, skill development and institutional support, Assam’s handloom sector can increasingly connect its traditional craftsmanship with modern domestic and global demand.
