India is currently facing an alarming air-quality crisis, particularly during the winter months when the Air Quality Index (AQI) in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Lucknow frequently reaches dangerous levels. When AQI rises to the “poor” or “hazardous” category, the air becomes unsafe to breathe. Exposure can cause irritation in the throat and eyes, persistent coughing, difficulty in breathing, and can significantly worsen respiratory and heart conditions such as asthma and cardiac disorders. However, what many people overlook is that simply staying indoors does not guarantee protection. Indoor air can often be just as polluted- sometimes even worse- because harmful particles from outside seep in through windows and doors and get trapped inside along with dust, pet dander, kitchen smoke, and chemicals from cleaning agents. Since we spend the majority of our time inside our homes and workplaces, clean indoor air has now become a fundamental health necessity.
This is why air purifiers are increasingly becoming essential for households across India. Advanced air purifiers equipped with HEPA filtration technology can effectively remove fine particulate matter, including PM2.5- the most harmful pollutant due to its ability to penetrate deep into the lungs. With regular use, air purifiers can significantly improve air quality within just a few hours, bringing noticeable relief in breathing, reducing allergy flare-ups, and enhancing sleep quality. For vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory sensitivities, they provide critical protection. To maximise efficiency, it is important to choose a purifier suited to the room size, operate it consistently during high-pollution periods, and replace filters at recommended intervals.
Highlighting the crucial role of clean indoor air, Dr. Anil Kumar, Scientist at Eureka Forbes, explains: “When outdoor pollution reaches extreme levels, safeguarding indoor air becomes a priority. A high-quality air purifier can reduce indoor particulate levels by more than 50–80%, offering real respiratory comfort and long-term health benefits for families. Clean air is not a luxury- it is an essential health requirement for every home in India.”
While air purifiers provide immediate protection, long-term resolution requires systemic change: reducing emissions from vehicles and industries, controlling construction dust, expanding green cover, and enforcing stricter environmental regulations. Until these larger interventions take effect, prioritising the air within our homes remains the most practical and responsible step for protecting family health.
As awareness grows and wellness becomes a central lifestyle priority, investing in clean air is becoming just as important as clean water and nutrition. Educating communities about indoor pollution, encouraging proactive measures, and adopting scientifically backed technologies like advanced air purifiers will be instrumental in building a healthier, more resilient future for millions of Indian families.
