New Delhi, Mar 20: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Thursday inaugurated the first-ever Sikkim International Film Festival 2026 in Gangtok, coinciding with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Sikkim’s statehood. The event was held in the esteemed presence of Governor Om Prakash Mathur.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister described the 50-year milestone as a moment of “immense pride and reflection” for the state. He stated that the launch of the international film festival marks a significant step toward establishing Sikkim as a vibrant hub of art, culture, and creative expression in the Himalayan region.
Highlighting the importance of cinema, Tamang said it is a powerful medium that transcends borders, connects people, and fosters mutual understanding. He noted that the festival aims to promote storytelling while encouraging dialogue, collaboration, and innovation among filmmakers and creative professionals. He also emphasised that participation from international partners, including the European Union, would further strengthen cultural ties and broaden global perspectives.
The Chief Minister outlined key features of the festival, including a Short Film Competition for regional filmmakers, a Film Market to encourage creative collaboration, and workshops led by industry experts. These initiatives, he said, would contribute to building a strong creative ecosystem and provide meaningful opportunities for the youth.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to promoting the creative economy, Tamang highlighted progressive initiatives such as the Creatorpreneur Policy, support for artists, and incentives for filmmaking in the state. He said these efforts are aimed at empowering young talent, preserving cultural heritage, and positioning Sikkim as a preferred destination for filmmakers.
Emphasising the state’s natural beauty and rich cultural identity, the Chief Minister said Sikkim holds immense potential in the global cinema landscape. He expressed confidence that initiatives like the film festival would help place the state firmly on the international cultural map.
He concluded by extending his gratitude to all partners, participants, filmmakers, and guests, warmly welcoming them to the state and wishing the festival grand success.
