Lilavati Hospital Initiated a free screening program for underprivileged patients suffering from lung and degenerative joint conditionsMumbai: In a remarkable display of community spirit and healthcare outreach, Lilavati Hospital, through its Menaben Helping Hands initiative, recently hosted a free medical camp aimed at providing essential care and support to underprivileged patients suffering from asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), osteoporosis, and osteoarthritis.

The camp, held at Lilavati Hospital’s through its SEWA department, welcomed over 250 individuals from underprivileged communities, offering them free consultations, diagnostic tests, medicines and treatment recommendations. The initiative is part of Lilavati Hospital’s ongoing commitment to improving healthcare access will be offering free treatment and surgical procedures for needy patients who were abandoned by their families and are facing financial hardships.

The camp featured a team of specialized doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who provided in-depth evaluations and personalized care plans for each patient. For those suffering from asthma and COPD, the team conducted thorough respiratory assessments, including spirometry tests to measure lung function. Patients received advice on managing their conditions, including medication guidance, lifestyle modifications for avoiding common triggers. Similarly, individuals with osteoporosis and osteoarthritis benefited from bone density scans and joint assessments. The healthcare professionals offered recommendations on pain management, physical therapy, and dietary changes to improve bone health and joint function.

Dr Amit Kohli, Senior Orthopedic and Spine Surgeon at Lilavati Hospital highlighted, “Over 250 individuals from underprivileged backgrounds, including from the old age homes and those abandoned by their families, attended the camp. Many of these individuals faced significant mobility issues due to worn knees, hips and spinal conditions such as spinal cord compression, which affected their ability to walk and resulted in bladder and bowel complications. Approximately 20 to 25 patients have been selected for free surgeries to improve their quality of life.”

Dr Pralhad Prabhudesai, Senior Pulmonologist, Lilavati Hospital said, “Patients suffering from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) received free treatment, including medications and inhalers. Those who experience respiratory issues in the future will also be eligible for free treatment, provided they present their diagnosis documentation at the camp.”

The Menaben Helping Hands initiative has been instrumental in organizing similar camps and outreach programs, reflecting Lilavati Hospital’s dedication to social responsibility and healthcare equity.

The camp received positive feedback from attendees, many of whom expressed gratitude for the comprehensive care and support provided. For many of these individuals, the event was a vital opportunity to receive medical attention they might otherwise have gone without.
