New Delhi, 19th February, 2025: As parents, one of the most crucial ways you can support your baby’s growth and development is by making sure their eyesight is healthy. A baby’s ability to see helps them recognise faces and explore the world around them, and vision plays an essential role in their overall development. While regular check-ups are important, parents are often the first to notice signs of potential eye problems. Catching these issues early on can make a huge difference in how well treatments work and help prevent long-term vision problems.
Dr. Rishi Raj Borah, Country Director, Orbis(India) says, “It’s so important for parents to stay alert to any changes in their baby’s eye health. Often, children with vision problems may not be able to express discomfort or concern, so it’s up to us to notice the early signs. The earlier we catch any issues, the better the chances for successful treatment. If you notice something unusual with your child’s eyes—whether it’s a misalignment, unusual eye movements, or persistent tearing—it’s important to seek advice. Early action can make all the difference in ensuring your child has healthy vision for life.”
For babies up to one year old, there are a few signs you can watch for. By three months, your baby should be able to follow moving objects with their eyes and make steady eye contact. If you notice they’re having trouble focusing or tracking objects, it’s a good idea to talk to their doctor. After four months, some misalignment in the eyes may be normal, but if you notice persistent inward crossing or outward drifting, it’s important to seek medical advice.
For toddlers and pre-schoolers, even if your child doesn’t complain about vision problems, conditions like lazy eye (amblyopia) can go unnoticed. That’s why regular eye exams are so important. You should also keep an eye out for things like misaligned eyes, a white or greyish spot in the pupil, uncontrolled eye movements, eye pain or discomfort, and excessive tearing or drooping eyelids. If you notice any of these, it’s time to reach out to a healthcare professional.
Addressing eye problems early is crucial. It can prevent long-term vision issues and help your child meet important developmental milestones. Clear vision supports their motor skills, learning, and emotional well-being, allowing them to interact with and understand the world more fully. As parents, staying aware and scheduling regular check-ups will ensure your child has the best chance at healthy vision in the future.
If you have concerns about your baby’s eyesight, don’t wait. Speak with their doctor today. A simple eye exam now can help prevent serious vision issues later on, ensuring your child has a bright, clear future ahead.
