India, Feb 11: ZEISS, a global pioneer in optics and optoelectronics, today launched Aatma, a groundbreaking set of cinema lenses at the World Premiere during the BSC Expo. Designed to merge modern optical precision with nostalgic image characteristics, Aatma draws inspiration from some of ZEISS’s most iconic lenses of the 20th century. Combining an emotion-driven aesthetic with mechanical reliability, data integration, and workflow compatibility, Aatma meets the demands of contemporary productions while offering cinematographers a unique toolset. The lens includes nine high-end full-frame T1.5 cinema primes: 18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 65mm, 85mm, 100mm, and 135mm.
Evocative of classic ZEISS lenses
The name “Aatma,” derived from the Sanskrit word for “innermost essence” or “soul,” reflects the lenses’ ability to evoke emotion while maintaining consistency. Inspired by classic ZEISS optics, Aatma lenses offer softly painted skin textures, reduced contrast, smooth focus transitions, and rich bokeh with a subtle soap bubble effect. This nostalgic yet refined aesthetic supports storytelling without compromising control or repeatability.
Balancing character with versatility, Aatma lenses deliver organic, emotionally resonant imagery suitable for diverse cinematic applications. Their rendering enhances texture and atmosphere, allowing filmmakers to infuse personal style while maintaining the precision required for modern productions.
Commenting on the latest addition to the portfolio Umender Shah, Head of Business – Cine, ZEISS India & Neighbouring Markets shared, “The introduction of ZEISS Aatma lenses is a game-changer for the Indian film industry, offering cinematographers a perfect blend of modern optical precision and timeless artistic character. These lenses enable filmmakers to create visually compelling and emotionally engaging stories while seamlessly integrating into today’s demanding production workflows. With their versatility, reliability, and unique aesthetic, Aatma lenses will inspire a new wave of creativity and elevate the cinematic experience across diverse genres in India.”
Consistent ergonomics for modern workflows
Aatma lenses combine a legacy-inspired optical design with ZEISS’ modern high-end cinema standards. They retain the trusted form factor, size, weight, and operability of ZEISS premium cine lenses, ensuring seamless integration into contemporary workflows. Equipped with ZEISS eXtended Data (XD) technology and fully integrated into the ZEISS CinCraft ecosystem, Aatma supports efficient workflows for visual effects, camera tracking, and virtual production.
