Satara: A team led by Dr. Vinod Patil, Hematologist, Onco-Life – Life Cancer Centre, Satara successfully treated a 70-year-old man with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer by giving him a second lease of life.

In December 2023, the patient was diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer. Myeloma (multiple myeloma) is a cancer associated with plasma cells. Moreover, plasma cells are white blood cells that are responsible for producing antibodies to prevent infection. Along with this cancer, the patient was diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, and pulmonary fibrosis. After this, the patient was given chemotherapy once a week for six months. After the patient’s disease was controlled, he was given injections for 5 consecutive days to increase the cell growth and he succeeded in getting his stem cells in the first attempt.

“During this treatment, the patient suffered from sore throat, mouth soreness, thinness of stool, and fever. Appropriate treatment was given to the patient for this. The transplant was ideal as the patient’s white blood cells were reduced to zero by chemotherapy and the patient was discharged in stable condition,” said Dr. Vinod Patil, Hematologist, Onco-Life – Life Cancer Centre, Satara.

These transplants are very challenging and complex, if managed properly, the patient’s disease can be controlled. Team dedicated team consisting of Dr. Vinod Patil, Hematologist, Honorable Uday Deshmukh, Chairman of the Center, Pratap Dr. Pratap Rajemahadik, Dr. Pushpalata Mottling, Dr. Prasad Kaware, Dr. Revati Pawar, Nursing and Pharmacy staff all made this transplant successful.
