Mumbai, Jan 17: Smile Concepts Dental Clinic, a leading dental clinic in Mumbai, has introduced Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), a Swiss-developed professional teeth-cleaning technology. More than 500 patients at the clinic successfully underwent the procedure.
GBT is designed to remove dental biofilm , the bacterial layer responsible for cavities and gum disease, using a guided, minimally invasive protocol that relies primarily on air-polishing with warm water and fine powder, followed by targeted instrumentation only where clinically required.
The clinic said the technology offers a more comfortable and efficient alternative to conventional scaling and polishing, which typically involves extensive ultrasonic or manual scraping across tooth surfaces.
“With GBT, the focus shifts to visualising and selectively removing biofilm rather than aggressively scaling every surface,” Dr Nitesh Motwani said, adding that patients reported reduced discomfort and improved overall experience.
According to Smile Concepts, patients undergoing GBT benefit from gentler cleaning, effective removal of stains and biofilm, and shorter appointment times. The method is also considered suitable for patients with sensitive gums and dental implants when used under proper clinical guidance.
GBT is positioned as a premium preventive dental service. In India, standard scaling and polishing procedures typically cost between ₹1,000 and ₹3,000, while advanced or GBT-style cleanings are generally priced higher, often in the ₹4,500 to ₹6,500 range, depending on clinical needs, city, and severity of staining or gum disease. Clinics adopting the technology also make significant investments in specialised equipment, which can cost several lakh rupees, contributing to the higher pricing.
Patients have also found the procedure easier to tolerate, particularly those who are sensitive to the scraping sensation associated with traditional cleaning methods, the clinic said.
“GBT is a big step forward in preventive dentistry because it targets what truly matters, the biofilm, while keeping the experience comfortable and efficient for patients,” Dr Nitesh Motwani, said adding that the clinic has already helped over 500 patients complete GBT cleanings successfully with a consistent feedback that it feels easier, gentler and encourages people to stay regular with preventive care.
The adoption of GBT is growing across India, driven by rising demand for minimally invasive dental care, increased awareness of preventive oral health, and higher expectations around aesthetics and gum health, particularly in urban centres. Greater investment by dental clinics in modern technology and a shift away from symptom-led treatment toward regular maintenance have also supported the trend.
Smile Concepts Dental Clinic offers preventive, restorative and cosmetic dental services. The clinic said the introduction of Swiss GBT technology reinforces its focus on evidence-based dentistry and long-term oral health outcomes.
